What is Acro anyway??

So, what is Acro Dance exactly? This is a very common question we get among parents. The Acro dance genre has exploded with popularity over the last couple of decades. If you have no idea what Acro is, that’s totally fine! This article will help you understand a dance that incorporates acro skills.

Acro dance is most commonly mistaken for gymnastics. While there are some similarities in both, acro is its own category. Gymnastics movements are usually performed in a straight line with what is frequently described as “hard hitting” moves. These moves also require lots of preparation and momentum. A classic gymnast would not divert their routine in a different direction, and routines usually do not involve a constant emotional fluidity, but rather feature movements.

Acro is an art form that incorporates both the fluid movements of dance and the difficult tricks from acrobatics. Dancers not only learn how to execute each move with strength, flexibility, and technique, but also learn to perform each trick seamlessly through choreographed routines. Simple, thoughtful progressions take the beginner preschool level dancer from log rolls and somersaults to the advanced dancer tumbling effortlessly across the stage!

Dancers will begin with basic stunts such as forward rolls, cartwheels, and beginner balances. More advanced students will continue to add to their repertoire with more advanced tumbling, balances, and partner lifts/stunts. Dancers who take acro classes have balanced development, are stronger, more flexible, and more fearless. They are more technically skilled, have fewer accidents, and are less likely to develop chronic injuries.
