Finding the Perfect Dance Class for Your Child: Where Do You Start?

So, your child wants to dance! Now comes the big question: Which class should you sign them up for?

With so many different dance styles, age groups, and skill levels to choose from, finding the right class can feel a little overwhelming. Do you choose ballet because it's a great foundation? Hip-hop because your child never stops moving? Or maybe the class their best

friend is taking?

While schedules and friendships certainly play a role, choosing the right dance class is about finding a place where your child can learn, grow, build confidence, and, most importantly, have FUN!

According to the National Dance Education Organization (NDEO), quality dance education supports children's physical, emotional, social, and developmental growth. Beyond learning dance steps, children develop independence, persistence, creativity, and confidence as they challenge themselves to try new things.

So, how do you find the right fit? Here are a few things to consider when choosing a dance class for your child.

1. Start With Their Age and Experience

One of the first things to consider is your child's age and previous dance experience. Most dance programs organize classes by age and skill level for a reason. Children learn differently at different stages, and the right environment can make a huge difference in their experience.

For beginners, a class that focuses on building foundational skills is a great place to start. Learning proper technique early helps dancers develop good habits they can carry with them as they grow. Think of dance education like building a house. You need a strong foundation before you can start adding all the exciting extras!

But here's something important to remember: The most advanced class isn't always the BEST class for your child.

It's tempting to want your dancer to move up quickly, but being placed in a class that's too advanced can sometimes lead to frustration rather than progress. The goal is to find a class that challenges your child while allowing them to feel successful, confident, and excited to keep learning. A great dance teacher can help guide you toward the appropriate level based on your child's individual development.

2. Find Out What Makes Them Excited!

Now for the fun part! Every child is different. Some love graceful movements and beautiful music, while others want to jump, spin, stomp, and dance to anything with a good beat.

The wonderful thing about dance is that there's something for just about everyone! If you're not sure which style your child would enjoy, here's a quick breakdown of some popular options.

Ballet: For the Dreamers

Does your child love to twirl around the living room? Ballet might be the perfect fit!

Ballet focuses on technique, coordination, balance, and graceful movement. It's also an excellent foundation for many other dance styles. And while ballet may look soft and elegant, don't let those beautiful movements fool you. Ballet dancers are STRONG!

Jazz: For the Energetic Performers

If your child loves upbeat music, big movements, and a little extra personality, jazz might be calling their name! Jazz combines technique with energetic movement, musicality, and performance skills. It's a great option for dancers who love expressing themselves and bringing their personalities to the dance floor.

Tap/Clogging: For the Rhythm Lovers

Does your child turn everything into a drum? Are they constantly tapping their feet or making up rhythms? Tap or clogging might be right up their alley! Tap and clogging focus on rhythm, timing, coordination, and musicality. Dancers get to become part of the music by creating their own sounds with their feet. It's a wonderful way to develop listening skills while having a whole lot of fun.

Hip-Hop: For the Movers and Shakers

If your child is always dancing when their favorite song comes on, hip-hop could be a fantastic choice. Hip-hop is energetic, expressive, and full of personality. It encourages creativity, coordination, and confidence while giving dancers the opportunity to explore different movements and musical styles. Plus, it's a great way to burn off some of that endless energy!

Lyrical and Contemporary: For the Storytellers

Some dancers love expressing themselves through movement and connecting with the emotions behind the music. Lyrical and contemporary dance combine technique, creativity, and storytelling. These styles encourage dancers to explore musicality and emotional expression while developing strength, flexibility, and control. They're wonderful options for dancers who enjoy bringing stories and feelings to life through movement.

Still Not Sure? That's Okay!

Your child doesn't have to choose just one style, and they certainly don't have to know what they love before their very first class. Sometimes, the style you think they'll enjoy most isn't the one they fall in love with. That's part of the fun! Trying different classes can help children discover new interests, develop additional skills, and find something they genuinely enjoy.

3. Think About Their Goals (And Yours!)

Before choosing a class, take a moment to think about what you and your child hope to get out of the experience. And remember, there's no wrong answer! Maybe you're simply looking for a fun activity that gets your child moving and gives them an opportunity to make friends. Perhaps your little one dreams of performing onstage, or maybe you have an older dancer who's ready to take their training to the next level.

Here are a few questions worth considering:

  • Is your child looking for a fun activity, exercise, and an opportunity to make new friends?

  • Do they love performing and want opportunities to dance in front of an audience?

  • Are they interested in developing their technique and becoming a stronger dancer?

  • Would they enjoy trying several different styles, or would they prefer to focus on one?

For younger dancers, the answers might be as simple as wanting to wear a tutu or dance with their friends. And that's perfectly fine! As children grow, their interests and goals may change. The important thing is to give them a voice in the process and find a program that supports where they are right now.

4. Remember, the Right Environment Matters!

Choosing the right dance style is important, but choosing the right environment is just as important. A great dance class should be a place where your child feels comfortable trying new things, making mistakes, asking questions, and celebrating their accomplishments.

Look for teachers who encourage their students, understand age-appropriate development, and recognize that every dancer learns at their own pace. Dance should challenge children, but it should also be something they look forward to each week.

After all, the friendships, confidence, and life lessons they develop in the studio can be just as valuable as the dance steps they learn.

5. Don't Be Afraid to Try Something New!

Here's the best part: Choosing a dance class doesn't have to be a lifelong commitment to one

particular style! Your child's interests will naturally change as they grow, and that's a GOOD thing. A child who starts out loving ballet might discover a passion for tap. Your energetic little hip-hop dancer might eventually fall in love with the emotional storytelling of contemporary dance.

Give them opportunities to explore, encourage them to step outside their comfort zone, and celebrate their willingness to try something new. You might be surprised by what they discover!

Ready to Find Your Dancer's Perfect Fit?

At the end of the day, there's no single perfect dance class for every child. The right fit depends on their age, experience, personality, interests, and goals. What matters most is finding a place where they feel encouraged, challenged, and excited to learn.

Because dance is about so much more than learning steps. It's about building confidence, developing discipline, discovering creativity, making lifelong friendships, and realizing what you can accomplish through dedication and hard work. And who knows? That first dance class might just be the beginning of something incredible!
